The Difference between Freeze-dried and Dehydrated Dog Treats & Food
The biggest difference between freeze-dried and dehydrated pet food or treats is the way the moisture is removed — and that directly affects nutrition, texture, shelf life, and cost. Both have the benefits of:
-
purity
-
whole foods
-
“food as medicine”
-
ancestral feeding
Yet, for me, personally…freeze-dried has the strongest reputation nutritionally, while dehydrated products are wonderful for natural chewing and enrichment. Both are amazing, yet a freeze-dried product has the moisture that I want for my pet.
Freeze-Dried Pet Food & Treats
The Process
Freeze-drying starts by freezing the raw food solid. Then, under very low pressure, the ice turns directly into vapor without becoming liquid (called sublimation). Very little heat is used.
What Happens to the Food
-
Keeps much of the original:
-
protein structure
-
enzymes
-
vitamins
-
amino acids
-
smell and flavor
-
-
Removes about 98–99% moisture.
-
Creates a light, airy, crunchy texture.
Benefits
-
Usually highest nutritional retention
-
Closest to a raw diet
-
Excellent flavor and aroma
-
Long shelf life
-
Rehydrates quickly
-
Less oxidation damage from heat
Downsides
-
Expensive to produce
-
Requires specialized machinery
-
Some fats can still oxidize over time
-
Raw-based products require careful sourcing and handling
Dehydrated Pet Food & Treats
The Process
Dehydration uses warm air and low heat over many hours to slowly dry the food.
What Happens to the Food
-
Moisture is evaporated through heat.
-
Removes about 90–95% moisture.
-
Texture becomes denser, leathery, chewy, or hard.
Benefits
-
More affordable
-
Great for long-lasting chews
-
Still much better than ultra-processed kibble
-
Can preserve nutrients fairly well if temperatures stay low
-
I replace dehydrated pet treats with manufactured biscuits. Honestly, dogs need real food; whether it's raw, freeze-dried or dehydrated. Many dog biscuits have unwanted binder ingredients and then are baked, which deplete the real foods nutritional value.
Which Has More Nutritional Value?
In general: Freeze-dried wins for nutrition.
Because almost no heat is used, freeze-dried foods usually preserve:
-
more enzymes
-
more natural vitamins
-
more amino acids
-
more raw nutrient integrity
That is why freeze-dried foods are often considered the closest shelf-stable option to fresh raw feeding.
